TALKS FOR GROWING CHRISTIANS

Pursuing the Path of Wisdom

BACKGROUND NOTES

DOCTRINAL POINT(S)

  1. The pursuit of wisdom must be chosen.

  2. The path of wisdom must be followed.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

  1. Ask yourself, “What would Jesus do?”

QUESTIONS

  1. Where in Scripture is the account of Solomon’s wise choice when God told him to ask for whatever he wanted? Why did God reward Solomon’s request?

  2. Identify several verses in this chapter indicating that God does give the believer the choice of pursuing wisdom or turning away from wisdom.

  3. In verses 20-27, what are the physical senses that Solomon mentions to use in following the path of wisdom?

ANSWERS

  1. In 1 Kings 3:5-14 we find the account of God giving Solomon his choice of desires. Solomon asked for an understanding and discerning heart – that is wisdom - on behalf of God’s people. God blessed Solomon and answered his request, “Because you have not asked for long life, nor for riches for yourself, nor for the life for your enemies, but have asked for understanding, behold I have done according to your words.”

  2. Several times, Solomon says, “do not forsake, or do not despise” wisdom. He also admonishes us “not to enter the path of the wicked,” but to “avoid it.” And in verses 26 and 27 he says, “Ponder the path of your feet . . . do not turn to the right or left . . .” It is clear that God gives us the choice to pursue wisdom.

  3. “Incline your ear,” Solomon says, “Let your eyes look straight ahead,” and “Ponder the ways of your feet.” In addition, we are exhorted to use our will or heart (vs 22, 23), all in order to successfully follow the path of wisdom.

DISCUSS/CONSIDER

  1. For many believers, the book of Proverbs is not often studied, particularly in depth. Considering all of the wisdom imparted in the proverbs for virtually every facet of our lives, discuss the possible reasons why most believers do not spend much time in this book of Scripture. Also discuss possible ways to encourage those believers you fellowship with to regularly read and study the “path of wisdom” found in this important book of Proverbs.

CHALLENGE

  1. Is it when “no one is looking” that temptations and failure to keep God’s standards most often occur in your life? Will you make a decision now to follow the path of wisdom at all times, just as this chapter teaches? “Let your eyes look straight ahead . . . keep your heart with all diligence,” even when “no one is looking.”

KEY VERSES

  • “My son, give attention to my words. Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes. Keep them in the midst of your heart, for they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh.” Proverbs 4:20-22
