TALKS FOR GROWING CHRISTIANS

Obeying Wisdom’s Commands

BACKGROUND NOTES

DOCTRINAL POINT(S)

  1. Believers receive wisdom’s blessings when they obey wisdom’s commands.

  2. Believers appreciate wisdom’s value when they follow wisdom’s counsel.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

  1. You can know God’s will for your life!

QUESTIONS

  1. To obey wisdom’s commands is to be obedient to God’s _______. While this chapter is addressed to “my son,” we know that the counsel of Solomon, wise counsel from God Himself, is to be applied to parents and all people in God’s ___________ as well.

  2. List the 6 blessings of wisdom found in the first 12 verses of this chapter. Then list the corresponding commands of wisdom which must be obeyed in order to receive the blessings.

  3. In verses 13-35, identify the key words or phrases that demonstrate the truth that believers must follow wisdom’s counsel if they are to appreciate wisdom’s blessings. For example, in verse 18 we read, “And happy are all who retain [wisdom].”

ANSWERS

  1. To obey wisdom’s commands is to be obedient to God’s Word. The words of wisdom addressed by Solomon to “my son” are applicable to children, parents and all the believers in God’s family.

  2. The 6 blessings found in the first 12 verses are; a long and peaceful life (v 2), favor with God and man (v 4), God’s direction in life (v 6), physical and spiritual health (v 8), the abundant filling of our needs (v 10), and God’s delight and love. The 6 corresponding commands found in these same verses are; to remember God’s precepts of wisdom (v 1), to practice kindness and truth (v 3), to put the Lord first and shun personal agendas (v 5), to humbly fear God and turn from ungodly ways (v 7), to honor God with the first and best of our material possessions (v 9), and to willingly accept the discipline of the Lord (v 11).

  3. Some of the words and phrases which indicate the necessity for the believer to follow wisdom’s counsel are: do not forget, keep, bind, write, trust in, acknowledge, honor, do not despise, find, gain, take hold of, retain, and do not depart from.

DISCUSS/CONSIDER

  1. According to verse 6, God will direct the path of those who acknowledge Him in all areas of their lives. Discuss how God can and does “direct” someone’s life. Consider the ways He has and is directing your life.

CHALLENGE

  1. Are you personally convinced that God’s wisdom is of more value than your material possessions (see verses 14 and 15)? Can you identify material things that you cherish so much that they keep you from spending time in God’s Word and seeking His wisdom? Are you willing to give these things up? Be obedient to the commands of wisdom so that you will experience the blessings of wisdom.

KEY VERSES

  • “My son, do not forget my law, but let your heart keep my commands. For the length of days and long life and peace they will add to you.” Proverbs 3:1, 2
