TALKS FOR GROWING CHRISTIANS

Wisdom in Correction

BACKGROUND NOTES

DOCTRINAL POINT(S)

  1. The Proverbs are wise advice for everyday living.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

  1. Follow the pursuit of happiness!

QUESTIONS

  1. What terms used commonly today in regard to the parenting of children would correspond to the terms “rod” and “reproof” used in the proverb of verse 15? Is there a connection with these terms and the truth taught in verse 17?

  2. The proverb in verse 19 indicates that mere words often will not bring about the desired correction. What would be two examples of how a student or employee could be corrected, resulting in the desired or necessary behavior?

  3. List four New Testament verses that confirm the truth stated in verse 23 regarding humility and pride.

ANSWERS

  1. Today, the terms “discipline” and “correction” are appropriately used to describe proper, biblical parenting practices. While the Bible is totally against child abuse, it teaches that child discipline and correction are proper and necessary, and may include physical punishment. The truth contained in verse 17 is apparent when we see well disciplined children demonstrate a particular respect for their parents and grandparents, and have a general respect for all adults.

  2. Examples to demonstrate the truth that, actions greater than “mere words” are often necessary to bring about desired changes in behavior, would be giving a student a failing grade or reducing an employee’s pay or benefits. Often this results in proper and improved behavior. This truth, that actions are often necessary in addition to words, is also applicable to the discipline and correction of children as we have noted in the previous question.

  3. Verse 23 says, “A man’s pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will retain honor.” Four New Testament verses that affirm the truth stated in this verse are Luke 14:11, Luke 18:14, James 4:10 and 1 Peter 5:6.

DISCUSS/CONSIDER

  1. Discuss the importance of correction and discipline in the lives of your children. While a discussion of the methods of raising children has the potential of causing conflict within a group of parents, consider the importance of sharing openly and learning from each other, acknowledging both the successful results of proper correction and discipline, and the failings from their absence.

CHALLENGE

  1. Have you become convinced that by obeying God’s Word you can experience a truly happy life? Have you tried other means of finding happiness, such as pursuing material or lustful pleasures and found that they have failed? Discover the revelation of God’s will for your life in the pages of His Word, pray for the power of the Holy Spirit to help you to be obedient to His Word, and experience the happy life that is pleasing to God - the life He has intended for you.
