TALKS FOR GROWING CHRISTIANS

Wisdom in Judgment

BACKGROUND NOTES

DOCTRINAL POINT(S)

  1. The Proverbs are wise advice for everyday living.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

  1. Love the Truth!

  2. Learn from the mistakes of others!

QUESTIONS

  1. Why have we used the title “Sayings of the Wise” for the proverbs in chapters 22:17 through chapter 24, rather than “Proverbs of Solomon”?

  2. What is the basic teaching about judgment and justice contained in the wise saying of verses 23-25? List other Old Testament references which also provide this teaching.

  3. In verse 29, what instruction is given beyond the teaching of the familiar “golden rule”?

ANSWERS

  1. The proverbs in chapters 22:17 through 24:34 include proverbs by other wise believers besides Solomon. The word “wise” in 22:17 is plural, so we attribute these proverbs to more than one author. In verse 20 of chapter 22, “excellent” sayings can be translated “30” sayings. From that point we have had 30 wise sayings up to the conclusion of this chapter (24) and this lesson (40).

  2. The basic teaching about judgment and justice contained in the wise saying of verses 23-25 is the exhortation for equal justice. Everyone, including the righteous and the wicked, should receive justice. Those committing crimes should be punished accordingly, whoever they are, and the innocent should not be punished. Equal justice was demanded under the Law. See Leviticus 19:15 as well as Deuteronomy 1:17 and 16:19 in this regard.

  3. In verse 29, the equivalent of the “golden rule” (Matthew 7:12) is given here, that is, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” However, this wise saying in verse 29 also includes the opposite, “Do not do unto others what you would not have them do unto you.”

DISCUSS/CONSIDER

  1. Discuss the notable cases that have come before the U.S. Supreme Court regarding religious freedoms. Consider the verdicts of the court regarding the matter of equal justice as emphasized in the teachings of this lesson.

CHALLENGE

  1. Do you pattern your life after those who continually fail to uphold biblical principles and lack the discipline of leading a godly life? Or have you identified trustworthy and faithful believers around you and made it a point to learn from them, through observation and counsel, and pattern your life after them? Learn from the mistakes of others, and learn from observing the godly among your acquaintances.

KEY VERSES

  • “Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may be wise in your latter days. There are many plans in a man’s heart, nevertheless the Lord’s counsel – that will stand.” Proverbs 19:20-21
