QUESTIONS
In the wise saying contained in verses 3 and 4, does the instruction refer only to the building and furnishing of a literal house?
Based on earlier study in Proverbs and in the background notes of this lesson, why does the wise saying in verse 7 locate the talking fool “in the gate”?
In verses 17 and 18, does this wise saying refer to the fall of an enemy on a global scale, such as in a war of nations?
ANSWERS
The teaching of the wise saying in verses 3 and 4 certainly can be applied to the building and furnishing of a literal house, where we would seek counsel in the financial arrangements and the drawing up of the plans, as well as the use of wisdom in the selection of a builder and in the inspection of the materials. The teaching can also be applied to the building of a marriage, a family, a ministry or even a church. In each case, careful planning, counting of the cost, disciplined work and constant prayer are all part of the wisdom, understanding and knowledge mentioned in this wise saying.
The talking fool identified in verse 7 is located in the “gate” because in ancient days the small open areas incorporated in the construction of massive, fortified gates were used as “offices” which functioned as the city courthouse where legal transactions took place. See chapter 4 of the book of Ruth in this regard. In this setting, we can conclude from this wise saying that governing a city or state takes wisdom, and a fool cannot understand these legal transactions or deal with such important matters. This should also instruct us regarding the people we vote for who will become involved with important governing matters – do not vote for a fool no matter how popular he may be.
The teaching in the wise saying in verses 17 and 18 refers to a personal enemy, not a national enemy. We are not to celebrate or gloat over the failure of a personal enemy, but rather leave the situation in God’s hands. Read Obadiah 12 and Romans 12:19 in this regard.
DISCUSS/CONSIDER
The idea given in verse 21 regarding an avoidance of those “given to change,” is to stay away from those who are rebellious and seek change through revolution. Discuss the proper role of advocating for change in political matters or voting for change when it is needed. Consider the role of protest, as well as an analysis of the people who take part in such actions.
CHALLENGE
Has your faith and commitment to Christ been challenged recently in the face of an adversary? Adversaries who challenge your commitment can be individuals, organizations or governments. Remember to constantly be strengthening your faith through the knowledge of God’s Word, through the encouragement of believers around you, and through the power of effective prayer.
