Forgetting God
Forgetting God
Was it all just a bad dream? I woke up with a start and a lingering sense of uneasiness. My brain feverishly assessed the situation… those few odd moments between sleeping and waking.
It wasn’t a horrific nightmare. I wasn’t being chased by hungry wolves or terrorized by a madman. I simply dreamed that I had lost track of my most treasured things. I’d take one of my favorite possessions somewhere, get distracted, and completely forget about it. Invariably it would get left behind… abandoned in some obscure place. This happened over and over; each time accompanied by a gut-wrenching feeling when I realized what had happened, and a frantic return to search for what I lost.
As I lay awake in the darkness afterwards, a verse came to mind. I definitely couldn’t recall the reference, but knew it went something like this: “Does a woman forget her jewelry, or a bride her wedding dress? Yet My people have forgotten Me.” (Jeremiah 2:32)
Most of us are very protective of our valuables wherever we go… our cell phones, wallets, jewelry, etc. But how often do we lose track of our most precious possession: our relationship with God? He’s always with us, but we get distracted, sidetracked, caught up in the moment. We leave God out somewhere along the way by simply forgetting about Him. Dare I say that sometimes we even do it… intentionally? Have you ever had that sinking feeling when you realize you’ve forgotten God?
Thankfully, we know He’ll always be there when we turn to find Him. In fact, His grace and forgiveness are probably the main reasons we let our guard down so often. But as Deuteronomy 6 says, “love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength” and “be careful not to forget the Lord.”
