ANSWERS

  1. In 2 Samuel 7, the Lord promises David that his throne will be established forever. Ultimately this promise was fulfilled in Christ, the eternal descendant of David.

  2. The validity of God’s promises to David are based upon God’s character. If God is not a God who keeps His word, the covenant means nothing. But because we know God’s character, we know His promises are sure.

  3. These are angels. They praise the Lord for His faithfulness, might, and supremacy.

  4. For the promise of the earthly reign of David’s descendants to be fulfilled literally, as intended in the Davidic Covenant, the Davidic throne must be reestablished here on this earth. This is not a heavenly throne or a reign over the hearts of believers in the church. The Davidic throne will be reestablished when the Lord returns to His literal, political, earthly kingdom.

  5. No. The Davidic Covenant would not be cancelled out even if the descendants of David turned away from the Lord, as many did. The Lord would have to discipline the offenders, but the covenant would remain.

DISCUSS/CONSIDER

  1. Discuss why the character of God is important not only for the validity of the Davidic Covenant, but for all His promises to us as believers.

CHALLENGE

  1. Ethan, the psalmist, had a problem understanding why God had allowed such a humiliating defeat of the Davidic king in view of the Davidic Covenant (verses 38-45). Ethan did the right thing by bringing it before the Lord in prayer. He kept praying even though he didn’t understand all that God was doing. Will you follow this example?
