PRACTICAL APPLICATION
Don’t presume when you plan!
QUESTIONS
Does verse 2 teach us that we should encourage or solicit praise from others? Why would the praise from a stranger be particularly welcomed?
What does Solomon mean by the phrase “love carefully concealed” in verse 5?
From the wisdom taught in verses 9 and 19, identify 3 reasons for keeping kind and trusting relationships with neighboring friends.
ANSWERS
The proverb in verse 2 does not teach us that we should encourage or solicit praise from others. It tells us only that we should allow that praise to be spoken if offered. Praising oneself is not a godly characteristic. Read John 5:44, 12:43 and Romans 2:29.
The phrase in verse 5, “love carefully concealed,” means that the love spoken of here does not hide when rebuke and discipline are needed. Open rebuke is better than love that hides from it. Read Proverbs 15:31 in this connection.
Three reasons for developing and keeping kind and trusting neighboring friends are that these friendships are pleasant experiences and can be the source of good counsel. These friendships are also valuable because they are always close by and not distant as are family members in many cases.
DISCUSS/CONSIDER
The proverb in verse 4 indicates that jealousy can be more destructive than anger and wrath. Discuss the experiences of and potentials for jealousy within the area of Christian service. Consider the possibility of jealousy resulting from the use of spiritual gifts, particularly when the giving of the gifts by the Holy Spirit and the use of the gifts are not clearly understood.
CHALLENGE
Examine your planning habits to see if you are acting on the truth that while you do not have any idea what the future holds, God knows exactly what the future holds. Are you planning with the attitude “if the Lord is willing”? Pray for godly wisdom and do not rely on worldly wisdom when you plan ahead. Read James 4:13-16 in this connection.
