QUESTIONS
Why are the proverbs in chapter 22:17 through chapter 24:34 referred to as “Sayings of the Wise” instead of “Proverbs of Solomon”?
What are the three motivations in verses 17-29 to follow the instructions of the “Sayings of the Wise.”?
In the wise saying of verse 22, does the term “gate” give an indication of legal or illegal oppression of the poor? Explain.
ANSWERS
The proverbs in chapter 22:17 through Chapter 24:34 are called “Sayings of the Wise” because some of them were written by wise writers other than Solomon, although most or all of them may have been compiled by Solomon.
The three motivations given to follow the instructions of the “Sayings of the Wise” are: It will be a pleasing store of wisdom that you can share with others (v 18). You will have a deeper trust in the Lord (v 19). You will have answers to give to those who come to you with questions (vs 20-21).
In ancient cities, the chambers or small rooms that were part of the construction of the gate of the city were the location of court proceedings. Therefore, the oppression of the poor that is being condemned in verse 22 was an oppression that was within legal bounds. So to take advantage of the poor, either legally or illegally, sets the Lord against you and on the side of the poor.
DISCUSS/CONSIDER
Research and discuss the boundaries of the land that the Lord originally gave to the Israelites following their wilderness wanderings. Compare those boundaries to the established boundaries for the State of Israel in 1948. Consider the boundary changes that have taken place since 1948, those that are being proposed today as part of a “two-state solution,” and those boundaries given in prophetic Scriptures for the future nation of Israel.

KEY VERSES
“Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise, and apply your heart to my knowledge; for it is a pleasant thing if you keep them within you; let them be fixed upon your lips so that your trust may be in the Lord . . . Have I not written to you excellent things of counsel and knowledge, to make you know the certainty of the words of truth, that you may correctly answer to him who sent you?” Proverbs 22:17-21
