DOCTRINAL POINT(S)

PRACTICAL APPLICATION
Don’t depend on only one human counselor!
QUESTIONS
In verse 19 of this lesson, the concept of the hedge is used to denote an obstacle. Is the concept of the hedge ever used in the Old Testament with a different meaning and application?
In a broader sense, who does the “widow” of verse 25 represent? What does it mean that the Lord will “establish the boundary” of the widow.
Identify two New Testament verses which show that the proverb in verse 29 can be taken as more than just a general truth in general terms.
ANSWERS
The idea of the hedge as an obstacle, as here in verse 19, is also found in Hosea 2:6. However, in Job 1:6-10, we see the hedge being a means of protection that God placed around Job.
In the broader sense, the widow in verse 25 represents the poor and defenseless, as was the typical widow in the days of Solomon, and as is often the case of a widow today.
John 9:31: “Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him.”, also James 5:16b: “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” These New Testament Scriptures establish that the truth spoken by Solomon in verse 29 can be taken as more than just a general truth in general terms.
DISCUSS/CONSIDER
Discuss types of bribes in which a Christian household could become involved, from the employment environment of the parent(s) to the behavior of the children. Consider the underlying motive of greed that often leads to bribery.
CHALLENGE
When was the last time you reached out to help the “widow,” the poor, the defenseless or oppressed? Do you find yourself being resistant to intentionally inserting yourself into the poor community? Pray for the Lord’s direction for service as He cares for and protects those in need.
