QUESTIONS
In the proverbs, or wisdom sayings, of this lesson, what are some of the characteristics that are to be found among wise and godly people?
What are two of the terms often used in these proverbs to describe those who do not follow the wise sayings of Solomon? Identify the undesirable results that are often realized when “the ways of wisdom” are not followed.
Identify two verses in which Solomon addresses the matter of unwise speech. What are the results that can be anticipated when words proceed from a person without wisdom?
ANSWERS
Characteristics found among wise and godly people are humility (v 2), integrity (v 3), being blameless and upright (vs 4, 5), having understanding (v12), discerning in speech (v 13), and open to counsel (v 14).
Solomon often uses the terms “wicked” or “unfaithful” to describe those who do not follow, or those who choose to go against his wise sayings. Some of the results are destruction (v 3), failure (v 5), being overtaken by lust (v 6), loss of a legacy and loss of hope (v 7), a troubled life (v 8), and being an evil influence on those around them (v 11).
Verses 9 and 12 address the matter of unwise speech which, as we see here, often results in the destruction or despising of one’s neighbor
DISCUSS/CONSIDER
Discuss characteristics that you believe are necessary for a person to be a trusted counsel for others. Consider steps your church could take to train and develop godly counselors.
CHALLENGE
Have you identified people in your circle of Christian friends who are known to be people of integrity and worthy of providing counsel? Are you willing to submit to their counsel when you are facing important decisions? Pray for humility and discernment as you seek godly counsel.
