DOCTRINAL POINT(S)

  1. Note: With this lesson, we are beginning the second division of the Book of Proverbs, that is, Proverbs of Wisdom. Therefore, we will be using the same doctrinal / teaching point for each of the following lessons in Proverbs. It is:

    The Proverbs are wise advice for everyday living.

QUESTIONS

  1. Proverbs are general _________ stated in general _______.

  2. List the characteristics of the wise and righteous person given in verses 4-11.

  3. Many of Solomon’s proverbs have to do with spoken words. Identify the verses in this lesson that give advice concerning our speech, and note the specific advice given.

ANSWERS

  1. Proverbs are general truths stated in general terms. Therefore, proverbs do not have exceptions – they are general truths.

  2. In verses 4-11, some of the characteristics given of the wise and righteous person are diligence, hard work, discernment, peacefulness, a good reputation, integrity and encouraging speech.

  3. Verses 6, 11, 13 and 14 deal with the words which are spoken by the wise and the foolish. In these verses, respectively, advice is given to speak gently and peacefully, speak words that lift up and give life, speak words that issue from an understanding heart and mind - a heart and mind that has listened and gathered much knowledge.

DISCUSS/CONSIDER

  1. Discuss child-parent relationships and the impact that the attitudes and behavior of children can have on the parents and the rest of the family. Consider your own family in this regard and how positive changes can be made in your child-parent relationships.

CHALLENGE

  1. The admonition given in this lesson to avoid laziness can be applied to many areas of life including witnessing, prayer-life, Bible study, service to those in need, work or vocation, and maintaining strong relationships with spouses, family members and other believers. Examine yourself today to see if laziness is creeping into any of these areas of your life. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men . . .” (Colossians 3:23).
