Artificial Intelligence: A Blessing or a Threat?
DEVOTIONS FOR GROWING CHRISTIANS
Artificial Intelligence: A Blessing or a Threat?
When you hear the letters “AI,” what comes to mind? Smarter computer systems? More efficient solutions? Or Hollywood-esque dystopian scenarios that threaten human control?
Recent polls show that the majority of Americans have significant concerns about the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and it has prompted many Christians to ask, “What role will AI play in our lives as Christ followers?”
Like it or not, AI is here to stay. It’s already impacting our daily lives in ways that we may not even realize. Some of this progress may sound promising, but it can also feel a bit intimidating… like a mysterious force that’s quickly getting beyond our control or comprehension. However, as Christians, we don’t have to view AI as a threat to our faith or values. When used carefully, AI can be a tool that can expand our capabilities and bring glory to God.
AI as a potential blessing
God is the supreme Creator, and He made us in His image to be creators and innovators as well. AI is a product of human ingenuity — a reflection of God's gifts of wisdom and knowledge to us. Proverbs 2:6 reminds us that this is a good thing: "For the Lord grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding."
As Christians, we believe that God's works are “amazing” (Psalm 111:2). AI is a modern marvel of human creativity, which is a testament to the incredible potential God has placed within us. The advancements in AI can be seen as a part of God’s plan to help humanity flourish. The potential benefits in healthcare and support for people with disabilities are especially promising. When we use AI to further knowledge for the greater good, we’re participating in the ongoing work of God’s creation.
Colossians 3:23 takes it a step further and says, "Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people." This reminds us that AI, like any other tool or talent, is not just for personal gain, but it can be used to serve and honor God. It can help us navigate life, solve complex problems, and serve others for God’s glory.
AI as a potent threat
While AI can drive great innovation, it can also be dangerous if used improperly. As with any tool, great power demands great responsibility. We should carefully consider the motivations behind the use of AI, and be cautiously aware of the potential for it to be misused for harmful purposes. James 3:16 warns us, "For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind."
Ideas like transhumanism, for example, could undermine human uniqueness and the divine nature of humanity. Deceptive technologies, such as deepfakes, can manipulate public opinion and spread misinformation. AI also has the potential to create false realities, where individuals may lose their connection with God and truth in favor of curated, AI-generated experiences. Some say the advancement of AI could even play a significant role in the end-times scenarios described in the book of Revelation.
Our role in a high-tech world
While these dangers cannot be ignored and we should always remain vigilant, Christians don’t have to fear AI or retreat from the uncertainties it might present. Progress is inevitable, so our goal shouldn’t be to hinder or resist innovation, but to align it with godly principles. We should embrace a proactive approach and use modern technology to our advantage whenever possible. As Ephesians 5:15-17 says, "Be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.”
Throughout history, inventions such as the printing press, radio, TV, and the Internet have raised similar concerns for Christians — and there’s no doubt these innovations have been misused for some harmful and sinful purposes. Yet, through the efforts of dedicated Christians, each of these technologies has made a unique and significant impact in spreading God’s Word and advancing His kingdom.
So as we engage with current technology, let’s prayerfully seek ways to use it for good and God-honoring purposes. When used appropriately, AI can not only promote significant advancements in society, but it can also support personal spiritual growth in ways such as…
AI can efficiently direct us to additional resources for Bible study as we obey God in deepening our understanding of Scripture.
AI can access and organize vast amounts of theological content, making it more accessible to a wider range of believers, including those who speak languages in which Bible study materials are scarce.
AI-powered tools and apps can facilitate spiritual discussions, enabling believers to receive encouragement and support on their spiritual journeys. This is particularly helpful for those who live in areas with limited Christian fellowship opportunities.
AI can enhance Christian outreach by providing new and effective ways to communicate the message of hope and love to others.
Still feeling unsettled?
If the ever-changing landscape of technology feels confusing and unnerving for you, James 1:5 encourages us to seek God's wisdom in all things: "If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you." We can turn to God for guidance in adapting to AI in a way that promotes confidence and reflects His will. We should also actively pray that AI’s progress is carefully managed, aligned with moral values, and focused on promoting the greater good.
No matter how advanced AI becomes, we can rest assured that God remains sovereign over all things. He will never be subordinate to any creation of man. Technology will always ultimately be subject to God’s plan and purpose (Isaiah 46:10). Even if our personal knowledge in the world seems overshadowed by AI, our faith remains timeless and relevant in every era. What Christ has done in our individual lives, and how we live it out, is the work of God within us — a work that no technology can ever replicate or take away.
