July 3rd
July 3rd
“The 3rd of July” just doesn’t quite have the same ring to it as the next day on the calendar, does it? It’s almost as if I can’t even imagine the founding fathers completing the Declaration of Independence on any other day than the 4th -- it just sounds like the right day for the job.
Other titles seem to fit perfectly with the item they describe. I’ve heard odd questions asked such as, “what would facial tissue or sticky first-aid strips be called if the terms “Kleenex” and “Band-Aid” were never introduced in the marketing realm years ago?”
So as I sit on my deck on this perfect July 3rd evening, I have two recurring thoughts:
#1 - Not a single person in my neighborhood seems to have the willpower to save this year’s fireworks supply until tomorrow night. And #2 - I wonder if there’s a generic “marketing term” that would fit me, and the lifestyle I project? In other words, what am I known for? Or what would I be remembered for if I left the area?
My dad, Dr Dave Reid, was well known for years to his students as “Dr Grace” -- and many still refer to memories supporting that fitting title. As a teacher, my dad didn’t want anyone to fail, even if they downright deserved it. He greatly encouraged students who were struggling, and found creative ways for them to use their own personal spiritual gifts and interests towards their grade in his classes. What an amazing example of Christ’s love and grace for us when we struggle and are doomed to fail without Him.
Matthew 5:16 Let your light shine before others, that they might see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
How can I reflect Christ in my life, and in such a way that I can be known and remembered – even by name?
