How many insects does a toad eat in one day?
What’s the tallest waterfall in the world?
How hot is lava?

My son, Dave, loves googling random things.  It’s like he has Google on speed-dial.  Every conversation leads to new questions that need answers. But searching for interesting tidbits is not a new mindset for him.  As a youngster, his favorite books all had titles like, “1,001 Strange but True Facts” — or something along those lines.  He’d consume page after page, offering anyone within earshot a cascade of odd knowledge.

– It takes Pluto 248 years to orbit the Sun.
– A flying snake can glide for distances over 300 feet.
– There are over 60,000 different species of trees growing on Earth.

I remember one day years ago when Dave said excitedly, “Dad, I can’t wait to get to Heaven because there are so many questions I want to ask God!”  

I smiled… “Yeah, that will be awesome!” I replied, and then added, “It might take a while for everyone to get a turn to ask God their questions, but we’ll definitely have plenty of time.”

Dave quickly corrected me as if he’d been pondering the scenario for weeks.  He said that there will be no waiting.  God already knows the exact questions each individual has, and He’ll instantly hand out custom printed books of amazing facts, photos and answers for each person in Heaven!

It got me thinking about how often I underestimate the creative potential of God.  Here I envisioned the residents of Heaven waiting in line for God as if they were registering new plates at the DMV. Meanwhile, Dave’s vision had God handing out personally signed hardcovers, with excited recipients eagerly flipping through the pages like classmates exploring new yearbooks in June.

As we get older, sometimes it can be hard for us to maintain an open and imaginative mind in our spiritual lives.  We get stuck in our ways and thought patterns.  We form routines and notions.  We think certain things must be said or done in a very particular way to please the Lord.  But why?  A quick look around creation assures us that God has an intense passion for creativity and variety. 

So let’s open our hearts and minds to new ideas in our churches and our own spiritual lives.  Let’s think outside the box as God does – using our unique gifts and talents to honor Him in creative ways.  It only makes sense that He would appreciate a wide variety of worshipful responses from His people.

1 Corinthians 12:4-6 – Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.
