Fast Food in a Ferrari?

It was a masterpiece on wheels. The supercar glistened in the parking spot next to mine, daring anyone not to turn and stare. The tires gleamed in the sunlight like polished onyx, and glassy smooth paint glowed a deep scarlet with rich black accents.

I paused to marvel at the luxurious leather seats and spotless array of technology on the dashboard. The interior was a picture of perfectio… well wait a minute, what’s that? Perched on the center console was a plebeian McDonald’s soda cup, complete with a bent plastic lid and gnarly, chewed-up straw. The pristine carpet on the passenger’s side was decorated with crumpled fast food wrappers and paper napkins.

I smiled and envisioned the owner of this extravagant import hollering at a drive-though sign for a Big Mac and a sack of fries. Despite a fine flair for automobiles, this person made a rather mediocre choice when it came to sustenance. 

Ephesians 2:10 tells us that we are God’s masterpiece. In other words, we’re His Ferraris, or Lamborghinis… or whatever vehicle you fits you best. We’re amazing creations in His eyes, and He custom built us to do great things! But as Christians, we often don’t pursue a turbo-charged life for Christ. We settle for less. We fall into the same old patterns and fill ourselves with mundane or even unhealthy choices.

Christian author John Ortberg wrote:  “The great danger is not that we will renounce our faith. It’s that we will become so distracted and rushed and preoccupied that we’ll settle for a mediocre version of it.”

The Lord has given each of us a Ferrari – now what are we going to do with it?

1 Peter 2:9  But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.
